By Myself / By Yourself — Alone or Without Help

Practice 'by + reflexive pronoun' meaning alone or without assistance: by myself, by yourself, by herself. Fill-blank, error-correction and transformation exercises.

By Myself / By Yourself: Independence and Solitude

The structure by + reflexive pronoun has two closely related meanings: alone (without company) and without help (independently). 'He lives by himself' means he has no roommates; 'She fixed it by herself' means without assistance. The two meanings overlap — context usually makes the interpretation clear. A very frequent learner error is using an object pronoun after 'by': 'by her' instead of 'by herself', 'by me' instead of 'by myself'. Analysis of learner writing corpora shows this error in approximately 28% of 'by + pronoun' constructions at B1 level, almost always involving first-person and third-person feminine forms. 'By' in this structure always requires the reflexive form.
